The LIFE program is the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action. The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation, by co-financing projects with European added value.

The Regulation (EC) No 1293/2013 establishes the Environment and Climate Action sub-programs of the LIFE Program for the funding period, 2014–2020. The budget for the period was set at €3.4 billion in current prices.

The LIFE program will contribute to sustainable development and to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy, the 7th Union Environmental Action Programme and other relevant EU environment and climate strategies and plans.

Within the LIFE program period 2014–2020, two successful projects are still ongoing:

In 2019, LIFE IP Climate Adaption and IP Nature projects together with the LIFE traditional PanPuffinus! project were being processed for full application and are currently under evaluation by EASME.

Currently, a good number of potential applicants have approached the Malta LIFE helpdesk for would-be collaboration within the LIFE calls for 2020. A list of around 10 project proposals are in the process of being evaluated by the LIFE Unit. There are several other project proposals that are still in draft stage to be considered for further collaboration.
