Simple actions that an individual or household can take to reduce their exposure to noise:

  • Do not use a horn in “quiet hours” for example, from 10 pm to 7 am on weekdays and until 8 or 9 am on weekends unless there is a traffic emergency
  • Do not honk your car horn near hospitals, unless there is imminent danger
  • Respect the law. Do not play loud music in a residential area after 11pm
  • Do not listen to very loud music for prolonged periods of time as this may damage your hearing
  • Keep your silencer serviced and your car tyres inflated to the correct pressure
  • Be prudent towards and respect your neighbours.  Noise from animals, alarms, machines, cars, boats and parties can be very annoying and intense or cumulative exposure can cause a range of health effects.
  • Report any breaches of the law to the police
