The Urban Greening Scheme for local councils in Malta and Gozo, was set up in 2014. The aim behind this scheme launched by Ambjent Malta is to incorporate projects which seek to green urbanised areas for the benefit of the mental and physical well-being of our communities, particularly those in industrial areas with a high population density. In addition, the introduction of green infrastructure in urban zones also serve an environmental purpose as these act as potential ecological stepping-stones for a variety of fauna, as well as pollinators.
These projects include, among other elements, tree planting, greening of squares and roads in urban areas, and the installation of new irrigation systems to ensure that the planted trees, shrubs and flowers remain healthy.
With a total investment of nearly a million euro, several localities have managed to give a green and more colourful look to the main urban centres.
During the first phase of the scheme, seven projects were selected. Gudja, Sliema, Marsaxlook, Senglea and Qala received funding of around €30,000 each to enhance roads and squares around the locality whilst Ħaż-Żebbuġ will be benefiting from €170,000 to plant trees and shrubs along the main street.
The scheme was extended to another nine local councils. Rabat, Xagħra and San Lawrenz received funding of €30,000 each for the installation of pots, flowers, shrubs and irrigation system around the main squares. The Valletta Local Council has benefitted from another €10,000 to embellish the capital city with flowers.
